I had a very lengthy comment left over at my blog that I would like to address, which accused me of being a scam artist, when I asked for help.

1.”There are indigent programs that cover hospital bills.”

I would probably qualify for these if I was financially independent. I’m still a student living with my family. I’ve applied for financial aid programs with the hospital and so far was able to get the bill lowered by a few thousand dollars. So that really helps. If there are any other programs that I qualify for, I was not aware of them.

2.” There are causes out there that actually need financail support and people like you, who don’t work and expect everyone to carry you really suck.”

I do work. I’ve been working at the same minimum wage job for the past 2 years, they are very flexible in giving me Mondays and Wednesdays off so I can go to school. I hurt myself AT WORK. However it was not a work related fall so they are not responsible to cover it. The HR representative fought very hard to have it covered by Worker’s Comp. So far it seems as though they will only pay for the day that I was hurt.

3.”Stop hustling people and use the mechanisms provided – BY LAW – in every hospital in the United States.”

I did- I applied for financial aid and it has helped a lot.

4.”I am legally disabled. I make $700 a month on disability. I have nothing and no one help me. I gave up trying to fund my film about homelessness – i.e. helping save peoples lives, and I live in cheap motels or on the street to continue doing my advocacy work. You are worried about paying your hospital bill because you have a credit rating. People that are truly destitute don’t have credit to worry about.”

I am glad that you are fighting for a very worthy cause. But your anger is slightly misdirected at me.Credit rating is the last thing on my mind- I am worried about going into debt. I don’t feel comfortable using your own information against you- but your disability is much more than I make in a month. I am lucky that my family has taken me in or else things could be a lot worse.

5.”you are eating up very the very limited resources people have available to help the planet by selfishly using your talents as an artist tohelp yourself.”

I sincerely believe that sending a dollar or two my way in exchange for a comic would not affect the amount of money someone would give to charities this year. People still buy entertainment and luxury items and still donate to worthy causes.

On Twitter it was mentioned- “…, how cute, why dont YOU help people.”

I’m offended that someone can have a full grasp of another persons character based reading a few tweets and blog entries. I do what I can to help, when I can, just like everyone else. What I do may be less than what others do- yet it might be more than most.

6.”Go ahead, have your fans pay your bills but know that every dollar you recieve froma fan buys 10 poundsof food at a foodbank. “

I would appreciate it, if instead of belittling my character you would provide links to websites or let us know of organizations where we could help out! I think that would be much more productive and more beneficial to your cause, which is a very important one!

7.”I don’t know you. I don’t care who you are but you are the third web comic artost i have seent hat is pulling this “please help me” bit while sitting on a $1500 computer, scanner, art supplies. I know when I needed to pay my bills I had to give up my art for a bit. But we wouldn’t want you to have to struggle a bit would we?”
